In pursuit, GOP contenders rumble through Iowa

Three Republican presidential candidates, each claiming to be the truly conservative alternative to Mitt Romney, are launching bus tours Tuesday through this early nominating state.
Just a week before Iowa's leadoff caucuses, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich prepared to rumble through small towns aboard their campaign buses. They're looking for supporters one at a time and hoping to become a roadblock for Romney, who is looking stronger than expected. Romney returns to Iowa on Tuesday after a quick stop in his long-established stronghold of New Hampshire.
Ahead of the Jan. 3 caucuses that officially begin the GOP's nominating calendar, the candidates were returning for a final rush of speeches, meet-and-greet stops and town hall-style meetings. And they are bracing for one last round of advertising, which most observers are expecting to be nasty.
Each campaign has also tried to gauge the level of enthusiasm for Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. The libertarian favorite has built a strong organization here and recent polls suggest he is peaking, a rise that has him tied with or even ahead of Romney _ and drawing more scrutiny for his views.
"There's really three primaries going on here," former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania told reporters in Adel, where he went hunting for pheasant and quail. "There's the libertarian primary, which Ron Paul is going to win. Then you've got the moderate primary, which Gingrich and Romney are scrumming for. And you've got three folks who are running as strong conservatives."
He included himself, Bachmann and Perry in that conservative camp. Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman signaled early on he would not compete in Iowa and instead plans to start his campaign in New Hampshire.
But with time ticking down in Iowa, several hopefuls are packing their days with rambling road trips to sparsely populated corners of the state. If history is a predictor, some of these candidates will be former candidates after the first contest.
Bachmann last week began her effort to visit each of the state's 99 counties, an ambitious pace that left her darting into diners and gas stations for quick visits. She was set to return to that pace early Tuesday in Council Bluffs, on the state's western edge. By nightfall, she was slated to have visited another 10 counties.
Perry was set to begin his tour in Council Bluffs several hours later. He planned just four stops during his day.
Gingrich was ready to return to the opposite side of the state, with three stops in Dubuque.
Paul was set to return Wednesday for a late push ahead of the New Year's holiday.
Many of those expected to participate in the caucuses remain undecided, and most of the contenders have seen their fortunes rise quickly and then deflate. Romney and Santorum have remained relatively steady: Romney solidly near the top and Santorum consistently struggling to build support.
Yet Santorum alone has achieved the accomplishment of visiting all 99 counties. With more than 350 campaign events behind him this year, he is hoping the early groundwork _ and a possible late surge _ help him beat expectations.
He was slated to start his day in Fort Dodge, in the deeply conservative far northwest corner of the state.

An Independent Group Will Be Running More Palin Commercials In Iowa

An independent group will be running the following youtube videos about the Governor as commercials in Iowa. They will air on KCAU-TV in the Sioux City, Iowa market. The second video will also air as a commercial during the Broncos-Chiefs game on WHBF-TV in the market for the eastern border of Iowa.

The Governor has not said she’s reconsidering. The Boston Globe notes that voter excitement is scarce and that “[o]thers are hoping, even at this late stage, that Sarah Palin, Jeb Bush, or Chris Christie will reconsider and get off the sidelines.”

Santorum is now almost tied with Romney and Gingrich among Republican and Republican-leaning independents in terms of intensity.

With less than five weeks to the first votes being cast in the Republican presidential race, the two main contenders, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, are showing signs they are ready to take off the gloves.

Gingrich accused the former Massachusetts governor of being “to the left of Ted Kennedy” and his rival hit back slamming the former House Speaker as “a lifelong politician.”
Most pundits believe that after months in which candidates such as Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Herman Cain have jockeyed for the role as the anti-Romney, Gingrich is now the last man standing, and the only one with a realistic chance of snatching the nomination from the long-presumed favorite.

And with the Iowa caucuses set for Jan. 3, and the New Hampshire primary a week later, time is against any other GOP candidate having the chance to close the gap on the two.

Gingrich, who has frequently urged his fellow Republican candidates to attack President Barack Obama rather than each other, was first to sharpen his claws by exploiting Romney’s reputation as a flip-flopper.

"If you run to the left of Teddy Kennedy, it is trickier than trying to run to the right of Newt Gingrich," he told CNN's John King on Monday, referring to Romney's 1994 Senate bid in which he was heavily defeated by Kennedy.

Gingrich’s comments echoed a Democratic National Committee advertisement issued on the same day that labeled Romney as “two men trapped within one body” because of his shifting position on issues including abortion, the stimulus, healthcare, immigration, climate change, union-busting, tax increases, gun-control and even whether he supports the policies of Ronald Reagan.

Gingrich said attacks on Romney for being inconsistent are “legitimate.” 

Earlier the same day Gingrich called himself “a solid conservative alternative” to Romney. “I don’t claim to be the perfect candidate. I just claim to be more conservative than Mitt Romney,” he said during a radio interview in South Carolina. “I wouldn't lie to the American people; I wouldn't switch my position for political reason.”

Romney finally hit back on Tuesday as he painted Gingrich as having no experience outside of politics. 

“To get President Obama out of office, you’re going to have to bring something to the race that’s different than what he brings,” Romney told Fox News’ Bret Baier. “He’s a lifelong politician.”

Rubbing his point home, Romney said, “Speaker Gingrich is a good man, he and I have very different backgrounds. He spent his last 30 or 40 years in Washington. I spent my career in the private sector, and I think that’s what the country needs right now."

Todd Palin Squares Off Against Heckler !!!

Des Moines, Iowa -- As we told you the other day, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hasn't decided yet to run for president. One big question she will have to answer is why she quit after only two years as governor.

The question came up as Palin and husband Todd swooped through the Iowa State Fair the other day. A woman, who identified herself as an Alaskan, questioned Todd about why his wife quit. He told her to watch "The Undefeated" -- the movie about Palin made by a conservative filmmaker.

They got into it, and the exchange ended with the woman calling Todd a "sellout."

It was wonderful to be back in Iowa today to visit the historic Iowa State Fair! Thank you for the invitation and tremendous hospitality, Iowa friends. We had the opportunity to meet more great Americans from the heartland and talk about the issues confronting our country today and the sort of leadership we need to move forward. Iowans have big hearts and a great deal of common sense, which makes visiting here all the more inspiring and insightful. Like the majority of Americans across the nation, the good folks here know that our country is in need of a restoration of the free market and constitutional principles that have made us strong and free and will make us that again as we get our country back on the right track.
The work ethic shown here by these farm families is so encouraging. The kids involved in healthy activities like 4-H and FFA are proud, strong young Americans who’ll grow up to help feed the country and run the nation’s economic engine – our small businesses. Keep up the great work, farmers!
What an inspiring day with great Americans. Oh, and the butter cow really is amazing... as is the fried butter-on-a-stick, the fried twinkie, the pork chops, etc.!
