An American flag with President Obama's image in place of the stars flew over a Florida county's Democrat headquarters long enough to enrage local veterans who called the altered banner "a disgrace."
Lake County Democratic Party officials took down the flag, which flew just below a standard Old Glory on the flagpole outside headquarters in Tavares following complaints by local veterans. But merely taking it down wasn't enough for several local veterans, who said they fought for the flag Betsy Ross made famous, not one with a politician on it.


"It's absolutely disrespectful," Jim Bradford, a 71-year-old veteran who participated in the Bay of Pigs Invasion told FoxNews.com. "It's totally ridiculous. To put somebody's picture there, to me, it's a disgrace to do that."
Bradford, an organizer with the Veterans Memorial at Fountain Park in Leesburg, Fla., snapped photos of the flag and distributed them to fellow veterans and friends. By late afternoon, he and several other veterans delivered a copy of the federal flag code to Nancy Hurlbert, chairwoman of the Lake County Democratic Party.
"We read that to her, but she would not accept that," Bradford said. "The discussion finally got a little bit heated."
The flag, which had been flying for several months without complaint and is available online for $12.95, was later removed by Hurlbert.

A Georgia man was slapped with a ticket and threatened with jail time after he refused to remove an American flag that’s been flying outside his business for more than thirty years.
An Albany code enforcement officer alleged that Tom Gieryic’s flag was in violation of the city’s sign ordinance. The standard size American flag was posted on a pole outside Gieryic’s automotive repair shop.


“It’s been there for 30 years,” Gieryic told Fox News. “She told me my flag was in the city’s right of way.”
Gieryic said his troubles started last week when a group of retired Marines showed up and offered to put up a new flag. When he returned from lunch, Gieryic was met by a code enforcement officer telling him to either remove the American flag or face fines.
The Albany city manager did not return multiple calls seeking comment.


“I was shocked, man – a complete loss for words,” he recounted. “I told her I wasn’t going to be moving my flag.”
He said he was told that if he didn’t comply, he could face a $1,000-a-day fine and up to 60 days in jail. But the auto shop owner decided to stand his ground.
“She stomped off to her car, got her ticket book and demanded my license,” he said. “She wrote me a ticket for flying my American flag on the city’s right of way.”
After Gieryic raised a ruckus with city officials, his ticket was later reduced to a warning. But he was told the flag still had to be moved – by exactly one foot.
“I’m boiling on the inside,” he said. “They didn’t demand that I move it. They suggested I do it as a gesture of good will.”
Gieyric said he’s received all sorts of support for standing his ground – from folks dropping by to shake his hand to others who’ve offered to help pay any possible fines.
“I got 15 business cards from lawyers offering their services,” he said.
Gieryic said he wants the law changed.
“My local city manager has been more than fair,” he said. “He stands behind me, but the law is the law and his hands are tied.”
He blamed the entire incident on “government getting involved in areas they don’t need to be involved.”
“The point is – I’m an American,” he said. “That’s the American flag. That’s American soil. It belongs to me and I’m going to fly it. I’m going to fly it where I want to fly it as long as it’s not a safety hazard – and it’s not.”

Family Fights for Their Flag !!!

The removal of an American flag from a Maryland traffic circle prompted a patriotic rally after a report that the road crew that took the flag down tossed it in the back of a dump truck.


According to the Baltimore Sun, Rhonda Winkler’s family first posted a flag in the Woodbine, Md. roundabout three years ago in honor of their soldier nephew’s deployment to Afghanistan. They’ve taken care of the flag ever since, replacing it with a new one every few months.


A month ago, a car crashed into the circle, running over the flag and destroying it. The Winkler family, aided by an 88-year-old World War II veteran, replaced the flag again and stuck a new gold-painted pole in the ground. At some point, a pine tree in the circle was also damaged: either in the crash or was heavily trimmed back to make the flag more visible, according to conflicting media reports.


Then, on Dec. 19, Winkler got a call alerting her that state road crews had removed the new flag and flag pole, tossing both in the back of a dump truck.


Her husband, Jeff Winkler, contacted the highway administration and was told people had complained about the flag and damaged tree, and that posting a flag on the roundabout was considered trespassing on state property.

“They told us it was against the law to erect a flag on the traffic circle,” Rhonda Winkler told Fox News. “They told my husband that whoever put up the flag could be arrested for trespassing.”

David Buck, a state highway spokesmn, told the Baltimore Sun removing the flag was also a matter of safety for the people who cross the street to get to the circle to take care of the flag.

“They don’t have traffic control out there, and they don’t have [road work] vests on,” he told the newspaper.

The Winkler family tried to get the flag back from the highway administration but has been unsuccessful.

“We figured it’s the American flag and we live in the United States of America – how can anyone have a problem with it,” Winkler told Fox.

As a result, the family planned a patriotic event in protest: They got a permit, borrowed a crane and hung a massive flag above the circle on Dec. 23. A large sign next to it read, “Welcome Home U.S. TROOPS, United Patriots of Maryland.” According to the Baltimore Sun, the event attracted dozens of people, many of whom waved their own flags in solidarity.

Buck said he hopes a solution can be found, but said allowing residents to put flags up in traffic circles would require a statewide policy change.

For her part, Winkler told the Baltimore Sun she’s “not a big stink maker.”

“I don’t sweat the small stuff, and we’re at the point [in society] where you can‘t say this and you can’t do that,” she said. “But the American flag is one thing we are all going to stand up for.”
