Dakota Meyer will become the first living Marine in 41 years to receive the Medal of Honor






President Obama is set to award the Medal of Honor to Dakota Meyer, marking the first time a living Marine will receive the honor in 41 years. Only two living recipients, both soldiers, have received the award for actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Attempted to find and rescue his fellow servicemen while fighting in eastern Afghanistan in 2009.
In 2009, Meyer’s unit was en route to meet some village elders in eastern Afghanistan when they were ambushed. Meyer was hit with shrapnel but kept trying, while under fire, to find three missing Marines and one Navy Corpsman. When he reached them, they had been shot, but he managed to carry each of their bodies out so that they could be given a proper burial.
Meyer has said he feels as though he’s the furthest thing from a hero and that in his mind, he let his fellow servicemen down.
