Poll: Gingrich soaring in Sunshine State
(CNN) - Newt Gingrich's poll numbers in Florida are skyrocketing, according to a new survey of Sunshine state Republicans.
An American Research Group poll released Thursday indicates that 50% of likely Republican primary voters in Florida say that the former House speaker is their choice for their party's presidential nominee, with 19% supporting former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Businessman and former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain is at 10%, with all other candidates in single digits and one in ten surveyed undecided.
Gingrich is up 39 points in just over a month. Gingrich was at 11% support in ARG's last Florida poll, conducted in October, with Romney down 9 points and Cain down 24 points.
Gingrich's poll numbers both nationally and in the crucial early voting primary and caucus states, have been soaring the past month. At the same time Cain's have been sliding, as he has confronted allegations of sexual harassment dating back to his years as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the late 1990's. The ARG poll in Florida was conducted Nov. 27-30, partially before and after Monday's allegations from an Atlanta businesswoman that she had a 13 year affair with Cain.
A Quinnipiac University survey of likely Florida Republican primary voters conducted Oct. 31-Nov. 7 had Cain at 27%, Romney at 21% and Gingrich at 17%.
The ARG poll indicates that 54% of self-described tea party movement supporters back Gingrich, with 16% preferring Cain and 8% supporting Romney. Among non-tea party supporters, 44% back Gingrich, with 31% supporting Romney.
Florida has become a major player in the race for the GOP nomination, thanks to the moving up of its primary date to January 31. Florida votes third in the primary and caucus calendar, following Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
The American Research Group poll was conducted by telephone, with 600 likely Florida GOP primary voters questioned. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.
