Rising in GOP Polls, Newt Gingrich Weighs In on Latest Personal Attacks: ‘I’m Very Comfortable Relying on American People’ to Decide for Themselves

New poll numbers showing the former Speaker of the House at the top of the GOP pack may be surprising to some, but they’re not to Newt Gingrich himself.
Gingrich spoke with Fox News on Tuesday morning to weigh in on his steady climb and what it is about his message that he believes resonates with voters.
“I think the American people are very concerned about the economy, about a $2 trillion deficit … I think they’re looking for somebody who makes sense and offers them an optimistic sense that we can get America to work again,” he said.
The former Georgia politician also said his experience serving in office, combined with his ability to maintain an outside perspective allows him to have the best of both worlds … politically speaking. But still, as he climbs in favor amongst voters, Gingrich is mindful of the bull’s eye ever on his back.
In the most recent attack, fliers were allegedly placed under hotel room doors in the caucus state of Iowa talking about his failed marriages. When asked how he plans to tackle such campaigns, Gingrich expressed his trust in the American people to use their best judgment not only with his political track record, but also his character.
“I’m very open about the fact that I’ve had moments in my life that I regret. I’ve indicated that I’ve had to go to God and ask for forgiveness and seek reconciliation,” he said. “Anybody who looks at me as a 68-year-old grandfather and says to themselves, ‘Has he grown wiser? Has he learned from his experiences? Is he someone that I can trust to lead the American people? They’ve got to make that decision themselves. I’m very comfortable with relying on the American people to have a sense of decency and to have a sense of understanding of human beings.”
