Gingrich Jumps Out to a HUGE Lead in Iowa

by Brian O'Connor

|| Newt Gingrich has jumped out to a HUGE lead in the latest Iowa poll. ||

Sharing in Iowa.

One of the most redeeming qualities of the 2012 Republican presidential contenders is their willingness to share. At one time or another, Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney have all taken the lead the lead in Iowa polling. Now you can add Newt Gingrich’s name to the list. With 32% of the vote, The latest Rasmussen poll shows Gingrich surging out to a double digit lead over his nearest competitor Mitt Romney, who has 19% support.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers shows Gingrich with 32% followed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at 19%. Georgia businessman Herman Cain, who led in Iowa last month, drops to third with 13% of the vote. Texas Congressman Ron Paul draws 10% of the vote in Iowa, while Texas Governor Rick Perry and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann each grab six percent (6%).

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum draws support from five percent (5%) of caucus-goers while former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman picks up two percent (2%). Only one percent (1%) would prefer some other candidate and six percent (6%) more are undecided.

Rasmussen Iowa Presidential Poll:
Newt Gingrich — 32%
Mitt Romney — 19%
Herman Cain — 13%
Ron Paul — 10%
Rick Perry — 6%
Michele Bachmann — 8%
Rick Santorum — 5%
Jon Huntsman — 1%

The question of course is, can Newt hold on? Gingrich’s fledgling surge is already threatened by the Fannie and Freddie discrepancies. Even if he plays his campaign perfectly from here on out, making no major mistakes or gaffes, there are still 20+ years worth of Washington enemies hiding in the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to cut the former Speaker down to size.

And if Newt does take a fall, where does the Republican party go next? Ron Paul? Rick Santorum? Gary Johnson? Does Mitt Romney finally take over the race for good? Or does one of the fallen candidates rise up from the grave?
